Aleksey Vasiliev is a photographer residing in Yakutia, a frigid area of Russia where temperatures sometimes drop to -58 degrees Fahrenheit (-50 degrees Celsius). He is noted for photographing Yakutians in their everyday life, and his images are both exciting and scary.
The photographer stated in a recent interview that he used to be an alcoholic and that when he eventually chose to stop drinking, he wanted something to replace the vacuum that stopping created. That’s when he became interested in photography. Even though Aleksey dreamed of touring the globe, he believes Yakutia has inspired him. “Yakutia looked to me like a hole, an ice desert,” the photographer said.
