When writer Dana Schwartz tweeted a horrifying image of an owl in a featherless state, many of us just wished we could press the “unseen” button. Dana says, “I just googled what do featherless owls look like, and I am very shaken.”
Also in her tweet, she brought up the “spookiest meeting of all time,” which is an ordinary owl meeting its relative, a featherless owl with an owl skeleton.

Parts of Southeast Asia are home to the unusual featherless owl type. The featherless owl has few scattered feathers on its head and body, unlike most owls, which have a thick coating of feathers. Its skin is naked elsewhere.
These owls’ unique look, which separates them from other owl species, gave rise to their name. Other names for them include “naked owls” and “skin owls.” With an average body size of only 10 inches, featherless owls are smaller than the majority of other owl species.
It’s interesting to note that the featherless owl is just not bald. It does have some downy feathers on its head and body, if you look closely. The stiff, hollow feathers that most other birds have are substantially different from these feathers. Soft and fluffy, downy feathers resemble those you might see on a chicken rather than an owl.
