Deddeh Howard, a Liberian-born model, is shaking up the fashion business with her new Black Mirror picture project. She recreates primary advertisements from well-known fashion labels that seem to use solely white models in their picture sessions.
On her website, Deddeh says, “I would go into different fashion model agencies, and I would instantly be compared to that one or two black models that they had on the roster.” “Even though those agencies told me I had a great appearance and that they wished they could represent me, they already had a black model.” Aside from having a plethora of white models. One or two black models on the list appeared to be enough to represent us all.
“For this project, I wanted to re-shoot a few of the most inspirational and well-known advertisements to see how they might appear with a black model.” Why can’t the large businesses accept our diversity and give us greater exposure? I wish to demonstrate to the world via this Black Mirror initiative that it is time for all of us to be seen.”
