A couple who went missing while climbing a mountain, their baby girl, and their dog were found dead in the mountains of remote central California mountains, but officials say the cause of their death is still unknown. The bodies of John Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter Miju and the family dog were found Tuesday in the Devil’s Gulch area. Search teams also parked their car near the entrance to the Sierra National Park.
“This is never the news we want or the news we want to give; it breaks my heart for their family,” said Mariposa Sheriff Jeremy Bryce in a statement. “Our sheriff’s clergy and staff work with their families and will continue to support them during this heartbreaking time.” The sheriff said he did not know the cause of the family’s death. So officials considered the location a Hasmart and an autopsy. “It could be a carbon monoxide situation. That’s one reason we consider it a Hasmart situation,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Christie Mitchell told the Los Angeles Times. “It could be a carbon monoxide situation. That’s one reason we consider it a Hasmart situation,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Christie Mitchell told the Los Angeles Times.
Mitchell told USA Today that there were no signs of trauma or injuries on the bodies.
“We don’t rule out anything at this point,” she said. The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to calls or emails. The Breeze family, who said they emigrated to mid-California last year during the outbreak, left for Sunday’s hike. As of Monday, a report on the missing had been filed. Gerrish, a software engineer, did not show up for work that day. And Fresno B reports that no one came near the door when a nanny who was supposed to take care of Miju rang the bell.
Family friend Steve Jeffrey Fresno told the bees, “I had to understand that it was not an overnight walk because it was hot and the baby was with them.” Gerrish came from England, and Chung was from Southern California. Jeffrey said that the couple moved from San Francisco to the mountains and wanted to raise their daughter more relaxed. And also, the Sheriff’s Office and the California Department of Justice are investigating.
