Dave Sandford is enchanted by the splendor of Lake Erie, North America’s fourth-biggest Great Lake. It is 241 miles (388 km) long, 57 miles (92 km) broad, and 62 feet deep on average (19 meters). The erratic, hazardous seas have caused between 1,400 and 8,000 shipwrecks. The lake was called “cat” by the Native Americans.
Sandford has been a sports photographer for 18 years. But he needed more, and he found it in Lake Erie. It may be -2 to 14 degrees Celsius with steady winds of 45-50 km/h, gusting to 70-100 km/h at Port Stanley. “On days like today, most people stay away from the lake…” Sandford added. “On days like this, Erie shows its full might. So excited to go to the lake and produce images!”
