When we think of a doll, we generally think of a human doll dressed in Victorian clothing or a Barbie. However, as Russian artist Valentina Gekova’s works demonstrate, there are various methods to build and dress up a doll. To put it simply, she creates incredibly cool beauties of animals such as dogs, lizards, giraffes, and others clothed in very stylish and comfortable clothing such as tracksuits, sweatpants, jackets, and so on. Even though the combination does not seem to be very common, it produces a decent final product.
Valentina spoke more about her origins and the process of creating these dolls in an interview. “I make my dolls out of baked clay. I’m completely self-taught and have never taken any classes. I’ve been doing this job for five years, and it’s been my major activity since then. I started by making little clay jars, then a (human) doll. Then there was the thought of producing an animal doll. The trendy style of the outfits I put on my dolls appeals to me. It’s not about vintage or history, but about the things that surround us in life.”
